Introduction
Mafia games are set in the Town, an unnamed settlement in an unknown country. The peace in quiet was abruptly ended when Mafia came into the town and started plotting to take control of it. The citizens must now again and again identify and kill Mafia members among them in order to save their town from the opressive regime.

Article 1
(Player and host requirements, rights, responsibilties, restrictions)

Player requirements:

Activity – To keep the game going, people MUST at least carry out their responsibilities by PMing the host if their role requires it. If the host deems a player inactive enough to slow down the gameplay, he is entitled to kick him (disqualify), meaning the player is not part of the Mafia game anymore.

Awarness – Before signing up, make sure you read the rules and guidelines. If you don't understand something, you can ask, but ask BEFORE THE START OF THE ROUND.

Fair-Play – I know I don't really have any means by which I could monitor what you tell each other via PM, MSN and other media, but please don't do that. If you cheat, you kill the fun. The only allowed communications are between Mafia members and between special roles and the host. So no inter-citizen PMing. Moreover, PMing between dead and alive players is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.

The host and his rights and duties:

The host is the member who keeps the game running. Every forum member has a right to host, though it has to be confirmed by me, Divisor. If the host does not follow his responsibilites or goes inactive, a new host is picked from the dead players.

Rights:
- The host can kick players if he deems them inactive or suspects them of cheating.
- The host can abort the round, put the round on hiatus or restart the round at any point in the game if he has reasons for it (mass cheating, inactivity).
Aborting the round: Closing the round and starting a completely new one.
Restarting the round: Closing the round and starting a new one with the same players, but different distribution of roles.
- The host can choose freely between the roles he will include in a round.
- The host can freely distribute the roles, though he must follow the rules (see: Roles).
- The host can provide hints, but he must write them in public.

Duties and restrictions:
- The host must help the players if they ask for it.
- The host must not give hints to players in private (reveal roles,…)
- The host is responsible for changing between Day/Night. He must change between Day/Night every 24 hours at maximum, though he is allowed to prolong the period if neccessary.
- The host must not reveal the contents of PMs he receives.

Article 2
(Roles)

Roles are PMed at the beginning of the round by the host. Roles are not exchangable, the role you get is the role you keep until the end of the round.
The following is the list of all existing roles. The host can freely choose which roles will he include in a specific round, though he must follow these rules:
- There have to be at least 3 bystanders in the round.
- The minimum Mafia member count is 3, at least one of them has to be a normal Mafia member.
- Sheriff, Doctor, Spy, normal Mafia and Godfather are obligatory roles.
Every role has a right to participate in the free discussion, to accuse and to vote. The rest is explained in the following list:

Basic roles

These roles are usually in each and every game. They are the most important, and usually all of them are needed to conduct a normal Mafia game.

Citizen side:

Bystander
Can only accuse and vote.

Doctor
Ability: Heal
Has the ability to save 1 person per Night. He performs this role by PMing the host the name of the player he wants to save. The name of the Doctor is not revealed in the Day round, only the target's name.

Sheriff
Abilty: Investigate
Has the ability to check which side a player belongs to. He can check 1 person per night by PMing the host his name. The checked person is not informed of Sheriff's action. He is allowed to reveal the results during free discussion. He IS NOT allowed to reveal his findings after he dies.

Vigilante
Ability: Murder
He has the ability to shoot (kill) 2 people per round. He executes this action by PMing the host anytime in the game. The Vigilante can only shoot 1 person per Night. The dead player's name is revealed in the Day round, the Vigilante's identity is not.

Spy
Ability: Infiltrate
The Spy doesn't have any special abilities, but he appears in the list Mafia members receive. He does not know any of the Mafia roles. He can learn of Mafia activity if he get accidentally PMed. He can reveal his findings as long as he is alive.

Mafia side:

Mafia Soldier (Mafia in short)
Ability:
A Mafia Soldier has the right to PM the host names of 3 players each Night (3-name PM). The name that appears on the majority of all Mafia members' PMs is the name of the player that will be killed that Night. Mafia members receive the list of all fellow Mafia members + Spy. Mafia members get their roles and Mafia member list in seperate PMs.

Godfather
Ability: Incognito
Beside his 3-name PM ability, the Godfather appears as a Citizen if checked by the Sheriff. Also, if he stays as last Mafia member in the game, he can kill two people per night, instead of one. Then, however, checked by Sheriff he'll appear as Mafia. He can choose the killing order. If the Godfather is banned (not inactive or away, only banned), a dead Mafia can assume his postion only if he remains the last one standing to execute his enhanced powers.

Assassin
Ability: Assassinate
Beside his 3-name PM ability, he can shoot (kill) one player per round. He executes his action as the normal Vigilante, by PMing the host at Night.

Advanced roles

Advanced roles are very optional: all the basic roles must be included in a round in order for an advanced roles to be included as well. They are usually added when there is more players in the round.

Citizen advanced roles:

Newbie Sheriff
Ability: Investigate
Has and executes his ability exactly as the Sheriff, however the results he gets are inverted. If he checks a Mafia member, he appears as a citizen and vice-versa. Has the same rights and restrictions as the Sheriff. If the Newbie Sheriff checks himself, he will always appear as a citizen.

Stalker
Ability: Stalk
Has the ability to follow one person per round. At any point in the game, the Stalker can PM the host the name of a player he wants to stalk. From that moment on, the host will PM the Stalker every detail of every Night action the followed player executes.

Policeman
Ability: Arrest
Has the ability to arrest one person per Night. He can use this ability 3 times per round at maximum. When a player is arrested, he can't accuse/vote in the following Day and cannot use his special ability in same Night he was arrested. The identity of the arrested player is revealed at the end of the Night.

Judge
Ability: Judgement
The Judge has the ability to single-handedly decide who among the accused players will be executed. When the list of the top accused players is posted, the Judge can send the host a PM with the name of the person from that list. That person will then be executed immediately.
The Judge can use his ability 2 times per game.

Mafia advanced roles:

Lawyer
Ability: Represent
The Lawyer has the ability to protect Mafia members from being executed in the Day. This is achieved by sending the PM to the host containing the name of the person the Lawyer wants to be acquitted. The Lawyer can send PM during various phases in the Day period:
1. If the Lawyer sends the host the PM during the accusation phase, the person will never appear on the voting list even if it's one of the top 3 accused.
2. If the Lawyer sends the host the PM during votings phase, the person cannot be executed even if it gathers the most votes.
As the Lawyer is only an accomplice to the Mafia, he doesn't know the Mafia (doesn't get the Mafia list), but the other Mafia know him (he appears on the Mafia list). He is also considered one of the Mafia in Citizen : Mafia ratio.
The Lawyer can save 3 players per game.

Hacker
Ability: Intercept
Beside his 3-name PM ability, he can intercept a player's PM twice in the round and modify it by his own liking. The Hacker executes his action by PMing the host the name of the player he wants to hack. The host PMs the Hacker the player's role and his Night action, afterwards the Hacker sends the host back the modified action. Due to the specific nature of the Hacker's role, he sends his PM at Day, not at Night. The Hacker sends his hack PM at Day, so the following Night the host can send him back the player's action.

Mindfucker
Ability: f*ck up
Doesn't have the 3-name PM ability. He gets and appears on the Mafia members list. If he gets checked by the Sheriff, he appears as a citizen. If he gets arrested by the Policeman, the arrest fails. If followed by Stalker, he appears as a Bystander. After death, he is marked as a Bystander. Appears as a citizen in the Roles list and Mafia : Citizen ratio. After the round ends, he is revealed as a Mindfucker.

Special roles

Special roles are the only ones that are not listed exhaustively: they are made up for the each game anew by the host and are usually only available once. If included, the special roles will be announced in the sign-ups thread of each round.

Article 3
(Gameplay)

The round consits of multiple Night and Day periods. Changing between Night/Day is the host's responsibilty. Night/Day can last 24 hours at maximum. The host can prolong this period if extremely necessary (mass inactivity, busy host,…). When the host announces the Day period, all roles who did not PM yet are disregarded. Additionally, all accusations/votes that are not made in the Day, will be disregarded as well.

Night:

The roles who PM at Night are:
Mafia Soldier, Godather, Assassin, Doctor, Sheriff, Vigilante, Policeman, Stalker

You cannot accuse/vote at Night, except if you feel you won't be able to do it at Day. In that case, you must not post your accusation/vote at Night, but PM the host, who will post your accusation/vote when the Day is announced. You can discuss freely during Night.

Day:

Roles who PM at Day are:
Lawyer, Hacker, Judge, Stalker

The Day period is split into Accusation and Voting phase. Chaning between two phases is the host's responsibilty, and he can do it whenever he likes during the Day. Players can also discuss freely during Day.

In the Accusation phase, anyone can accuse anyone. You can accuse by posting the name of the accused player in color, bold, italic, underlined, etc. It must be seperated from the other text by an empty line.

You can change your accusation once, and only once. If you change your accusation, you must make it clear enough.

In the Votings phase, anyone can vote for top 3 accuses players from the previous phase. You vote the same way you accuse, and you can also change your voting once.

Article 4
(Sanctioning)

-If a player is suspected of cheating, the host can kick him.
-If a player is deemed inactive, the host can kick him.
-If a player reveals information* after death, he cannot participate in the next round.
-If a player deletes the post he has already made or edits it in a way that changes its meaning, the host can kick him.
-If a player spams/flames/breaks the normal forum rules he gets kicked + warned.

-If a non-player posts in the Mafia game thread when the round had already started, he gets warned.

-If more than 1/3 of players are inactive, the round can be aborted/put on hiatus.
-If it comes to mass cheating, the round can be aborted/restarted.

*Information you MUSTN'T reveal after death:
-Sheriff: mustn't reveal the results of his checks.
-Spy: mustn't reveal any information he might have gotten from Mafia.
-Mafia: mustn't betray their fellow Mafia members.
-Hacker: mustn't reveal the details of his hackings.
-Policeman: musn't reveal who he arrested.
-Stalker: musn't reveal the details about the person he followed.

Article 5
(Tips and further instructions)

The following points are not obligatory and you'll not be punished if you do not heed them, but you should consider them anyway if you want the game to be enjoyable for everyone.

  • Game = Round; Period = Day/Night (Night period and Day period); Phase = Accusation/Votings
  • Try to be active in the general conversation as much as possible. You may think that if you're a Mafia member you won't expose yourself by being quiet, but that will in fact only draw suspicion to you.
  • Try to explain your every action. When accusing and voting, give reasons. Bandwagoning without any proper reason can again draw suspicion or it simply makes you look like a brainless sheep, incapable of making its own decisions.
  • Please, please and again please send your PMs as soon as possible. If you think or know that you'll be busy at the time you need to send your PMs, you can send the host multiple PMs in advance. I'd really like to have ALL roles post within a reasonable period (let's say 24 hours), because I don't really like leaving out anyone and on the other side I hate it when Days and Nights last for...well...actual days and nights xD

Article 6
(Amendments)

I'll occasionally add some bits to the rules that don't really belong to any of the upper sections, you can find them here.

UPDATE: REGARDING DEAD PLAYERS

Since dead players (especially those who die at the beginning of the game) do little or nothing to contribute to the game, I'm making two special modes using which you are still able to participate.

Zombie mode: Axer already used this one last round, it basically means you are ressurrected as a zombie in case the number of citizens equals the number of Mafia. As a zombie, you can only accuse/vote.

Ghost mode: Ability to convey (forbidden) information even after death, but through a proxy. You can use Ghost mode by PMing me what you want to say, and I will then pass on that information to a random person, not necessarily a citizen. The player who gets the info will then do whatever he wants with it.

UPDATE: REGARDING SPECIAL ROLES

Killing special roles will have another benefit: a hint for the team that kills it.
In this case, if Neo dies, the Mafia gets a hint regarding the citizens and vice-versa: if Smith dies, the citizens get a hint regarding Mafia. The exception is if Neo uses Merge - voluntary sacrificing himself to kill a Mafia shouldn't result in punishing the citizens.
It doesn't matter who kills who, f.e. if a Vigilante kills Neo, the Mafia still gets a hint (maybe this will prevent Vigilantes to be too trigger-happy).
The hint will be posted in public, for all to see.

UPDATE: WHY SO RECKLESS?

This is more a personal note and not a rule per se. I noticed in the previous game that both Vigilantes were actually doom for the citizens, because none of the 4 bullets killed a Mafia. So this is a...well...like...appeal or something to the Vigilantes in the following games.
I really don't understand why do you need to kill in the first Night. I mean, you have absolutely no proof at all that the person you're about to shoot is a Mafia, and there is roughly 1/3 chance that you will waste one. Killing people randomly just because is not in any way helpful to the citizens, and I can say with absolute certainty that the last round wouldn't be lost if one Vigilante (I'm not saying which one) killed two citizens in the first two nights with like no motive at all.
Don't take this to your heart and QQ about it, just note that you're damaging your own team.

Complaints and comments about the rules belong in this thread. Keep the game threads clean please.

Like, instead of just "I vote axer xDDD" you write:
Then Don Albino (my char) arrives the pub where all people gathers in the evenings. This time there was no-one there, so Don Albino decided to fullfill his cleptomanic desires, and so he stole all the spoon wares.
After some minutes when he was succesfully stolen all spoon like- objects from the pub, he decided to take a little nap. Before falling sleep, he carved one name in the bar desk. that name was "AXER"

Something like that, so the game would be little longer and more interesting. But then, you must add the rule which shows that you should not make other characters do suspicious stuff etc. We used to play this style of mafia in other forum, and it was really fun.
